Gum Health Matters Even Though Implants Cannot Get Cavities

This is why bleeding, swelling, tenderness, or other changes around an implant deserve attention. Do not assume that an implant is fine simply because it does not hurt.

Early evaluation gives your dentist a chance to identify problems before they become more difficult to manage.

How Can You Make Dental Implants Last Longer?

You cannot control every factor associated with implant longevity, but you can control many of the habits that protect your investment.

Start with consistent oral hygiene. Brush your teeth and implant restorations thoroughly, and clean the areas between them every day. Your dentist or dental hygienist may recommend floss, interdental brushes, a water flosser, or other tools depending on the type and position of your restoration.

Keep your regular dental appointments as well. An implant that feels completely normal can still develop early changes in the surrounding gum or bone. Routine examinations allow your dental team to monitor the implant, restoration, bite, gums, and supporting bone.

You should also protect your implants from excessive force. If you grind or clench your teeth, tell your dentist. Your dental team may recommend a night guard or another approach to reduce stress on your teeth and restorations.

Can a Dental Implant Last a Lifetime?

Yes, it is possible for a dental implant to last for the remainder of a person’s life, but no dentist can promise that outcome for every patient.

Long term studies show that implants can remain functional for 10, 20, and even more years. At the same time, implants can fail because of biological complications, mechanical problems, excessive forces, smoking, changes in oral health, or other individual factors.

It is more useful to think of a dental implant as a long term medical and dental treatment rather than a permanent device that never needs attention.

If you take care of an implant the same way you would want to protect a healthy natural tooth, you give it a much better chance of serving you for many years.

What Happens If a Dental Implant Fails?

Implant failure does not always mean that you have lost your chance to replace the tooth with another implant.

Treatment depends on why the implant failed, how much healthy bone remains, whether infection or inflammation is present, and the overall condition of the area.
